To increase the total useable floor space inside a building these two slatted structures stand in the scratch areas, and by providing the majority of the slats needed they significantly reduce the amount of slats on either side of the nests.
Polypropelene belts on both tiers are run about once a week to remove droppings, which reduces amonia levels and simplifies the cleaning process at the end of each laying cycle.
One circuit of chain feeder is installed on each of the tiers, but the nipple drinkers are usually sited close to the nest boxes.
In practice, the stocking density is increased from 9 to just over 11 birds per square metre of the buildings floor area.
